After reading Vincent Kent's review from what the school was like as Reading Alternative school I can proudly say that it has come along leaps and bounds from the "dumping ground" that it seemed to be. I appreciate what Vincent said about the type of child being misunderstood and labelled, but thankfully staff are better equipped to address the SEMH (social, emotional and mental health) needs of the students now. We still have those students who do not succeed with us, as is the case with any school, but we are proud of the progress we make with most students and parents are appreciative of the changes in their children that are noticeable at even the earliest of stages.We have had numerous "Good" results from Ofsted and won the Pride of Reading School of the Year in 2015. So Vincent, things have changed for the better.
Went here when it was Reading Alternative School. This was & probably still is for children who are (correctly or incorrectly) labelled as troublemakers. First and foremost, no child is a troublemaker; they are troubled. Once there, the mainstream system forgets about them & the reasons that resulted in them being there are never addressed. Your child will have the pleasure of spending upto 5 years in what they may remember as hell on Earth. They will leave with basic to no qualifications & enough emotional (possibly more than a few physical) scars to haunt them forever. The teachers were brilliant and did their best to make the childrens lives easy. However, they were not trained in how to deal with the varied range of issues; I very much doubt this has changed. This place is an example of when someone does not want to deal with certain issues; preferring to brush them under the carpet. Your child will not thank you for putting them here. Avoid entertaining any suggestion of putting your child here. Deal with the problems your child faces, please don't ignore them.
